Pavement Markings Northwest:
Using iSqFt Technology to Pave New Trails

You know those roads you drive on every day, and the lines you (try to) stay between? There are companies that paint those, of course, and the processes can be a good deal more involved than you may have ever imagined. Just ask Ron Taylor from Pavement Markings Northwest, Inc. (PMNW) out of Boise, Idaho. We spoke with Ron who gave his iSqFt customer review and provided us with his thoughts.

The Work Is Complicated

Much like a building gets finished on the inside once the structural parts are done, roads get finished with important markings, lines and signs. PMNW does those things.

“Where things can get a little complicated for us is in the regulations/specifications,” says Ron. “There are city, county, state, and federal requirements that dictate what kind of paint should be used, and there are at least half a dozen different kinds of base formulation paints and numerous other versions of those base paints depending on application requirements. That’s why it’s important to know where the work is, so we can figure out the requirements.”

Information Is the Key

The same goes for the signs Pavement Markings puts up, since they manufacture and install some, but source out the larger ones. Here again, information and the union of that information is the key to differentiating a great project from one that isn’t a good fit.

And that’s where iSqFt comes in.

“What’s going to be most helpful to us,” says Taylor, “is our ability to collaborate with each other using iSqFt. Tools like the filters and tracking folders have been key to helping us waste less time.”

“Using the filters and [Auto Search’s] Match Indicators, we’ll be able to find just the right projects faster than ever,” says Taylor.

The number of projects that require the kinds of services Pavement Markings offers is enormous. That’s when PMNW uses iSqFt’s filter panel, to find projects that deserve a closer look. “We can filter by geography, job size, or even work function. If we’ve got the capacity for a striping job or signage, we can look for those. It helps us even out the business and work more efficiently.”

Even better, Taylor says, is that each of the filter combinations can be saved for use later. “We’ve got a dozen or so that help us find just what we’re looking for pretty easily and in a fraction of the time.”

When interesting projects are found, they can be tracked and put into folders that allow everyone at the company to take a look. “We’ve customized the folders so everyone can see which projects we’re watching, which ones we’re bidding, and which ones we’re waiting to hear back on. Having a single place where anyone in the company can see what’s going on keeps us from wasting time.”

And the best is yet to come. PMNW recently upgraded their subscription to include iSqFt Auto Search, which searches projects by keywords they choose, and lets them go directly to the spot in the specifications where the relevant information is. “Using the filters and [Auto Search’s] Match Indicators, we’ll be able to find just the right projects faster than ever,” says Taylor.

Taking Collaboration to the Next Level

“We keep working on finding new ways to reduce re-work, to communicate, and work together. I’m pretty excited to see what we end up with — I think it’s going to be pretty great.”

PMNW sees their work with iSqFt as a work in progress. For as much as they’ve been able to improve their processes so far, it’ll be interesting to see what they’re able to do next. We’ll be sure to check back with them in the months ahead, and see what new in-roads they’ve been able to make … or stripe.
