With Earth Day and Arbor Day last week, it’s been pretty easy being green, so we put together the “Green Edition” of our iSqFt Nuts & Bolts newsletter. Check it out and let us know about your thoughts on green construction trends.
According to a recent article in Popular Science, the earth has been getting greener, “accumulating an additional 4 tons of biomass (vegetation) between 2003 and 2012.” With Earth Day on the horizon, I started to think about what role an increasingly green construction industry might have played.
Here are four important ways the industry improves the environment every day:
Like all industries, the construction industry is seeing rapid advancements in technology, but unlike most industries, the construction industry has relied on age-old techniques for a very long time. Nobody likes change, but I think we all agree that our industry in particular is pretty resistant.
Simply put, we’re on the verge of something big. It’s the kind of shake-up that has the potential to revolutionize the way that people perform their jobs on a daily basis.
Greenbuild is the largest event of its kind, drawing people from a wide range of professions from all over the globe. If you’re attending, you know that there’s a lot to see and do. If you’re there as an exhibitor, you even more aware of that fact.

Last week, iSqFt traveled to the 2012 Greenbuild International Conference and Expo in sunny San Francisco. Hosted by the U.S. Green Building Council, Greenbuild is the world’s premier (and largest) expo and conference dedicated to green building, drawing industry leaders, dedicated sustainability professionals, and construction experts every year. They come to learn, to teach, and, of course, to network.
And since iSqFt is all about networking, we couldn’t miss Greenbuild’s 10th Anniversary conference.

Over the past few years, the green building movement has gone from a relatively small initiative powered by some forward thinkers to a trend that is embraced by a growing majority of contractors, suppliers, project owners, and design professionals. And it’s their buy-in to the green movement that will provide the opportunity for contractors and construction professionals to expand their services to include green building.
But what trends should construction professionals expect in the near future? Here are three that we’re keeping on our radar.
